RTML Tuning sims ; ATF2 flight simulator

Steve Molloy made a presentation on his initial moves to study the emittance preservation and steering/tuning issues in the RTML.  He's using a slightly modified version of the RTML optics which is properly adjusted to achieve the 14 mrad crossing angle at the IP.  In the x plane he's using RMS steering (minimizing the RMS BPM reading on all the BPMs with all the correctors), since there are correctors only at the F quads; in the vertical he's using 1:1 followed by KM steering, with a goal of achieving < 4 nm emittance growth with 90% confidence.  A number of suggestions for further activities were made, most notably:
  • Fix the highly chromatic beta match between weak- and strong-focusing areas of the lattice
  • Try using SVD in the steering to avoid correctors fighting one another
  • Consider limiting the corrector strengths
  • Consider some sort of kick diagnostics (true orbit through the lattice, plot of residual kicks at all corrector / quad / BPM locations, etc)
Steve also showed a quick demo of his "pre-alpha version" of an ATF2 flight simulator, which uses Matlab GUI tools and Lucretia.  It was suggested that he talk to Greg Portmann about the issues involved in tying Matlab and GUIs to EPICS databases.

Mark Woodley talked about the plans for the upcoming ATF runs at KEK, which will start on or around November 26 and continue through December 22.  The tentative plans include 4 "training shifts", probably in the first week of the run (last week of November).  As in the last run, SLAC will set up the old PEP control room in Building 685 for local people taking remote shifts on ATF.  It is recommended that people bring headset telephones for those shifts, since ordinary speaker phones are pretty useless.  More PCs, optimally laptops, are also needed for people who are on shift so that they can do actual number-crunching while in B685.  Mark and Andrei will be at KEK from 8-22 December, and so somebody else will have to take on the job of the local run coordinator during that time.
