Description
The CALICE collaboration is performing R&D for the construction of highly
granular calorimeters for a future dectector which will be operated at the
International Linear Collider (ILC). The collaboration has constructed and
operated several prototypes: A Si-W calorimeter ECAL comprising
approximately 10000 pads, a hadron calorimeter with 7608 scintillator tiles
individually read out by Silicon Photo-Multipliers and an ECAL which
consists of tungsten plates and small scintillators read out via MPPCs.
There is also a Digital Hadron Calorimeter concept (DHCAL) which uses
resistive Plate Chambers with 1 x 1 cm^2 readout pads.
We report on the commissioning and operation of the prototypes in
test-beam, characterise the response of the detectors to electors and
hadrons, and present the latest data compared to Geant 4 predictions. The
test-beam results have delivered valuable information allowing the
improvement of the layout for the next generation of prototypes, including
a full scale calorimeter module being studied as part of the EUDET program.
