Minutes of LCUK Silicon Vidyo Meeting 11/3/15

Konstantin, Chris, Aidan, Ryan, Phil, Glenn, Georg Joost, Peter

Apologies: Armin, Yvonne, Wing, Adrian

News and Announcements

  • There are some teething problems with the Bristol Wiki. Joel is trying to sort them out with local IT Services
  • The Doodle has decided the next meeting will be on Wednesday 15th April. Georg kindly offered Oxford as the host, starting at 11:00 (now confirmed).
  • Unfortunately no-one from the UK was able to attend the first CLIC tracker WG meeting, but it is important that we become involved.
  • Aidan and Phil will be going to the Asia LCWS at the end of April

Low Power Sensor Concepts

Konstantin's gave his postponed talk on PPD/4T pixel technology as a candidate for low power/low noise sensor technology for pixel tracking. He estimates an average power of 540W, a low peak power (good for reducing magnetic forces and the need for local energy storage) and a 15sigma MIP signal (essential to control the noise hit rate).

The PPD/4T technology has not yet been used in an active HEP experiment, and there are some technological challenges (particularly fast charge collection) but there is no hard theoretical limit to the size of the pixel (100-500um may be quite feasible) and the size is decoupled from the noise.

Konstantin currently has a project looking at this technology for the UK Space Agency.

The talk was followed by questions and a discussion on the synergy with ongoing LHC upgrade R&D.

AOB

Georg is setting up a student project to get started on the alignment and software issues. Armin will be spending some time in the Hamburg region so can talk to the DESY people about their CMS experience in this area.

The focus of the Oxford meeting will be to discuss how we can practically get started with work on the mechanical and related isseus.
