Description
This talk will report on the status of C-band research activities at Los Alamos National Laboratory. This includes commissioning of the Cathodes And Radio-frequency Interactions in Extremes (CARIE) high gradient C-band RF photoinjector test stand and design and fabrication of the high-gradient C-band proton acceleration structures. We are testing functionality of the CARIE test stand by conditioning the high gradient photoinjector capable of producing electric fields at the cathode up to 250 MV/m. The photoinjector is powered by a 50 MW, 5.712 GHz
Canon klystron. The all-copper photoinjector is fabricated and cold-tested and undergoes high gradient testing which is likely to finish this Fall. We have also designed and are fabricating a four-cell high gradient C-band accelerating structure for the LANSCE accelerator booster designed to accelerate beta=0.93 protons to the final energy of 3 GeV. The structure will have to be tested at cryogenic temperatures which requires infrastructure updates at CARIE. Finally, at the C-band Engineering Research Facility (CERF-NM), we recently finished the high
gradient testing of the C-band cavity with nickel-chromium higher order mode absorbers. We are conducting the post-mortem inspection of the cavity to evaluate the effects of high gradient on the nickel-chromium absorbing material. The statuses of the CARIE facility, CERF-NM facility, their high-power operation, and the results of various high gradient tests will be presented.
