Description

The Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), Chinese Academy of Sciences, is actively developing sustainable technologies for future particle accelerators, with the goal of reducing energy consumption and improving overall energy efficiency. Our activities cover a broad range of accelerator technologies, including superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities, permanent-magnet systems, high-efficiency RF power sources, energy-recovery power supplies, and energy-recovery RF loads.

For SRF accelerators, we are investigating technologies to improve cryogenic efficiency and reduce the overall power consumption of accelerator facilities. Permanent magnets are being developed as an alternative to conventional electromagnets, offering significant potential for reducing power consumption and simplifying accelerator operation. High-efficiency klystrons and other RF power sources are being developed to achieve higher wall-plug efficiency, with energy-recovery technologies further improving RF system efficiency.

In addition, IHEP is exploring heat-recovery technologies to reuse waste heat generated by accelerator facilities, including the recovery and utilization of hot water. Energy-recovery power supplies and energy-recovery RF loads are also being studied to recover otherwise wasted electrical and RF energy.

These efforts aim to establish an integrated approach to sustainable accelerator design and operation, contributing to the development of greener, more energy-efficient, and economically sustainable future large-scale accelerator facilities.
