        Engineering developments for the CLIC tracking system Bringas

        The CLIC detector tracking system is currently composed of a vertex detector with three double-sided layers of silicon detectors on both the barrel and forward regions and a silicon tracker consisting of six barrel layers and four/seven endcap disks on the outer/inner tracker subsystems, respectively. The strict requirements in terms of material budget (2 x 0.2% X0 per vertex double layer and 1% X0 per tracker layer) require the development of novel low-mass support structures and non- conventional cooling solutions. This talk will present the layout and support structures concepts that are currently being explored for the tracker as well as first results from finite element simulations and small scale prototypes. In addition, the developments on the prototyping of vertex detector staves for thermal studies will also be reported.

        Microchannel Cooling for Vertex and Tracking detectors Bringas (Palacio de la Magdalena)

        In this contribution a novel cooling concept for light-weight position-sensitive detectors is proposed. Our solution is based on a micro-channel cooling circuit that is integrated in the silicon sensor. Results are presented of a characterization of the cooling performance of several mechanical samples fabricated at HLL in Munich. A moderate flow of order 1 l/h of mono-phase cooling liquid is found to be sufficient to evacuate a power dissipation of several tens of Watts with a minimal temperature gradient between coolant and the sensor surface. The liquid flow has no significant impact on the mechanical stability of the sensor. A finite-element simulation can provide an adequate description of the cooling performance and is used to extrapolate the results to a more realistic environment.

        FBG sensors for Humidity and temperature monitoring in trackers systems Bringas

        The accurate monitoring of environmental humidity inside the tracker envelop is of extreme importance in order to assure the good performance of the detector (for detecting leakage in the cooling circuits or other tracker failures involving a reduction of the environmental dryness). So is the control of electronic and sensor temperature (for detecting bad performance of the cooling system, problems with electronics and sensors). Due to the very hostile operating environment working conditions (ionizing radiation, magnetic field, EMI...) it is hard to find an common humidity or temperature sensor for this application and the current state-of-the-art technique is based on sniffing part of the envelop atmosphere inside the tracker envelope and measure the humidity outside the envelop. Fiber Bragg Grating optical fiber sensors are suitable for working under these very hostile conditions (they are not sensitive to EMI or magnetic fields, and the can be make radiation hard). For this reason, it is interesting to use FBG sensors to monitor humidity and temperature in tracker volume. The sensitivity to humidity of FBG sensors with different coatings has been tested trying to develop a reliable humidity sensor. It has been studied too the repeatability and the possible influence of radiation in humidity sensitivity. For the temperature monitoring several sensors has been studied in order to avoid humidity effect and several fixing system has been tested in order to avoid strain transmission to the fibers. As case of application actually the FBG sensors are intended to be installed in Belle II tracker for humidity and temperature monitoring.

        Full-scale Thermo-mechanical mock-up of the Forward Tracking Disks Bringas

        The current generation of solid-state position sensitive devices has better precision, greater integration and less material than previous generations of detectors. Detector solutions have been developed for 50 micron thin, small-pixel sensors with a resolution of a few microns. Ultra-thin sensors require new concepts for mechanical support that maintain good thermo-mechanical performance at a fraction of the material budget traditionally reserved for these services. New ideas for support structures and integrated low mass powering and cooling systems must be characterized thoroughly before finding their way into the experiment. The talk will address the thermo-mechanical performance of thin self-supporting all-silicon ladders and petals in the LC environment. The effect of a pulsed power supply on the mechanical and thermal stability is evaluated. Two strategies are explored for cooling as the air cooling and micro-channel cooling. The thermo-mechanical properties of dummy sensors are studied, analysed and compared with a finite element simulation. We characterize rapid thermal excursions, vibrations and deformations due to the air cooling and power pulsing. A first mock-up of the Forward Tracker Disks for the ILD detector is presented.

        Technological Developments on iLGAD Detectors for Tracking and Timing Applications Palacio de la Magdalena

        This presentation introduces the latest technological development on the Inverse Low Gain Avalanche Detector (iLGAD). This structure is based on the standard Avalanche Photo Diodes (APD) concept that includes an internal multiplication of the charge generated by radiation. The multiplication is inherent to the basic n ++ -p + -p structure, where the doping profile of the p + layer is optimized to achieve high field and high impact ionization at the junction. In order to ensure a uniform electric field distribution along the device, the iLGAD is a pad-like LGAD with P-type multiplication layer below the N+ implant, in which we change the P+ implantation, by several P-type strips in order to segment the readout electrode, like a P-on-P microStrip detector. In this structure, we move the multiplication layer to the back-side of the chip, and define the ohmic readout elements, strips & pixels, in the front-side, as shown in Figure 1. That means the collecting current is dominated by holes instead of electrons. This kind of device with inner amplification allows us to reduce the substrate thickness in order to develop a low-mass tracking systems with thinner microstrips sensors conserving the same SNR. iLGAD structures could be interesting for tracking and timing applications, as well as for primary interaction vertex or medical applications. In this work we will present the basic technological steps and the last characterization results of the first iLGAD fabricated at CNM.

        Silicon micro-strips detectors are the baseline for the tracker region of the future International Linear Collider (ILC). Nevertheless, variations of this type of sensors like resistive micro-strips or more innovative detectors like Low Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGADs) have been presented as possible candidates thanks to some of their advantages, like 2-D positioning in the cases of the resistive micro-strips or a notable improvement of the signal to noise ratio in the case of LGADs [1]. In this paper, an ASIC fabricated in 180 nm CMOS technology from AMS with the very front-end electronics used to readout the signal from different sensors (micro-strips, resistive micro-strips, LGADs as well as inverse LGADs) is presented as well as its experimental results. The front-end has the typical architecture for Si-strip readout [2], i.e., preamplification stage with a Charge Sensitive Amplifier (CSA) followed by a CR-RC shaper. Both amplifiers are based on a folded cascade structure with a PMOS input transistor and the shaper only uses passive elements for the feedback stage. The CSA has programmable gain and a configurable input stage in order to adapt to the different strip flavours (resistive micro-strips, LGADs and inverse LGADs). The fabricated prototype is 0.865 mm x 0.965 mm and includes the biasing circuit for the CSA and the shaper, 4 analog channels (CSA+shaper) and programmable charge injection circuits included for testing purposes. Although the front-end can be used in different sensors, the design have been focused in optimizing it for resistive micro-strips. For this reason, a spice model of the resistive micro-strip detector developed by IFCA has been used at the design stage. Noise and power analysis performed during simulation fixed the size of the input transistor in W/L =960 um/0.2 um. The shaping time is fixed by design at 1 us and, in this ASIC version, the feedback elements of the shaper are passive, which means that the area of the shaper can be reduced using active elements in future versions. Finally, the different gains of the CSA have been selected to maintain an ENC below 400 electrons for a micro-strip detector with a capacitor of 20 pF, with a power consumption of 150 uW per channel.         Silicon sensors developments with Infineon Austria Bringas

        Most modern particle physics experiments use silicon based sensors for their tracking systems. These sensors are able to detect particles generated in high energy collisions with high spatial resolution and therefore allow the precise reconstruction of particle tracks. The same technology now also becomes used as the active sensor in calorimeters. Today, only a few vendors are capable of producing silicon strip sensors with the quality needed for particle physics experiments. Future detectors like the upgrades of the LHC detectors or the ILC detectors will increase the demand for planar silicon sensors to many hundreds of m2 produced within just a few years. To satisfy this increasing demand, the establishment of additional high quality and high volume producers is crucial. Together with the European-based semiconductor manufacturer Infineon Technologies AG (Infineon) the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (HEPHY) is developing planar silicon strip and pad sensors for high volume productions. This talk presents the current status of the collaboration and shows results from measurements on sensor produced in 6" and 8" technology.

        Operation of the first full-sized DEPFET PXD Modules
        The DEPFET collaboration is in the final construction phase of a highly granular, ultra-transparent active pixel detector for high-performance vertex reconstruction at the Belle II experiment, KEK, Japan. A complete detector system is being developed, including solutions for ultra-thin sensors and their mechanical support, r/o ASICs, cooling, services, and a DAQ system capable of handling the huge amount of data coming from the pixel detector. In this paper, the status of the DEPFET project is reviewed highlighting the milestone achievements in the construction of the Belle II pixel detector PXD. The main focus of this paper is the characterization of the recently finished pilot production of the sensors including the module assembly. The sensor module is a silicon based multi-chip module (MCM) with the module substrate being the sensor wafer itself. There are three functional regions on the MCM: the 75 µm thin sensitive active pixel area with the DEPFETs in a two metal and two poly-silicon layer technology, the “end of stave” with three metal layers (two Al and one Cu) where the read-out electronic is placed, and the narrow long with the steering ASICs. Three types of ASICs are used: a mixed-signal ASIC as the analogue front-end and ADC, a digital data handling chip, and a steering chip in HV-MOS technology for the row-wise addressing and clearing of the pixel matrix. There are 14 chips in total on the module, all bump-bonded to the sensor substrate, about 3000 bumps in total. In addition about 100 SMD components for supply line de-coupling and signal termination purposes are placed on the substrate. The finished module has almost 200 kPixels and is read out at a continuous frame rate of 50 kHz via a wire-bonded and solder-attached flex cable. The whole detector will be assembled out of 40 modules, yielding a complex sensor system of about 8 Mpixels. The sensor and module concept was originally developed for the application at the ILC detectors and adapted to the requirements at the SuperKEKB B-Factory. The paper will focus on the achievements in the construction of the Belle II pixel detector, the system tests done in the lab and in the beam at DESY and will discuss the results in the light of an application at a future linear collider.

        Characterization and performance of large thin DEPFET detectors
        The DEPFET collaboration is building a highly granular, ultra-transparent active pixel detector for high-performance vertex reconstruction at the Belle II experiment in the new super flavour factory in Japan. A complete detector system is being produced, including solutions for ultra-thin sensors and their mechanical support and cooling, front-end electronics, services and a DAQ system for handling the huge amount of data coming from the pixel detector placed close to the interaction point. The first production grade sensors have been equipped with the latest generation of read-out and steering ASICs. The modules were extensively tested in the lab and two modules, one for each layer of the Belle II pixel detector have been illuminated with an electron beam at DESY. Together with four double-sided strip detector layers, the system under test was effectively a complete sector of the final vertex detector of Belle II. This presentation will present the pre-characterization in the lab and the test beam results obtained during the latest test beam campaign.

        Evolving CMOS Pixels Sensors (CPS) to allow for more demanding requirements of the ILD vertex detector
        The DBD requirements for the ILD vertex detector refer to the 500 GeV running assuming the use of an anti-DID to mitigate the beam related background in the vertex detector. They do not incorporate a luminosity upgrade nor do they explicitly target a highly efficient low momentum tracking and a suppressed fake track rate. Test results of CMOS pixel sensors showed that the DBD requirements can be accommodated but the performances obtained up to now would not be suited to the more demanding requirements mentioned above. To address the latter, CPS are being developed at IPHC, which allow for a significantly faster read-out. The talk proposed will summarize the on-going R&D activity and its mid-term plans and goals.

        TPA-TCT a High Resolution Technique to characterize small-size pixels Bringas

        Very recently, an innovative Transient Current Technique was introduced where the free charge carriers are created in a Two-Photon-Absorption (TPA) process induced by a focused femto-second laser pulse with a wavelength of 1300nm. The fact that in a TPA process the absorption of the light depends on the square of the intensity of the light beam used for the current generation allows a localized TPA-induced electron-hole pair creation in a micrometric scale voxel centered on the laser waist. As a consequence, this new technique opens the possibility to carry out a 3D mapping of the sensor’s space-charge properties with micrometric resolution. Due to its intrinsic spatial resolution, the TPA-TCT technique is a very appropriate choice for the characterization of the alterations of the sensor’s active volume induced by the ionizing radiation; in especial manner, for the case of partially depleted sensors as it is the case of the carrier collecting n-well implemented in HV-CMOS sensors.Using the TPA-TCT technique on a HV-CMOS device the deep n-well has been accurately measured being able to to determine its effective doping concentration for the first time in this kind of depleted CMOS devices achieving a unprecedented insight on the doping level and dimensions of the deep n-well suitable for a better understanding and optimization of the device design.

        Recent ASIC developments for the CLIC vertex detector Bringas

        As part of the R&D towards the CLIC vertex detector, many different technologies are being investigated. The current expectation is for a hybrid pixel detector, with the readout ASIC either bump-bonded to slim-edge planar silicon sensors or glued to “active" HV-CMOS sensors. The first generation of capacitively coupled assemblies for CLIC were tested extensively during 2015, and served as input to the design of new devices, created specifically to meet the vertex detector requirements. An overview of the measurements leading up to their design will be presented, along with the final design of both the readout ASIC (CLICpix2) and the HV-CMOS sensor (C3PD). Parallel developments on power-pulsing of the electronics, crucial to achieve the low power budget required at CLIC, will also be presented.

        The physics aims at the future CLIC high-energy linear e+e- collider set very high precision requirements on the performance of the tracking detectors. Moreover, these detectors have to be well adapted to the experimental conditions, such as the time structure of the collisions and the presence of beam-induced backgrounds. A single-point resolution of 3 um in the vertex detector and 7 um in the tracker and time slicing at the level of approximately 10 ns have to be achieved. All-silicon vertex and tracking systems meeting these requirements are currently under development. Both hybrid concepts and fully integrated sensors are under consideration. In this talk, test beam studies of planar silicon sensors read out by Timepix3 and CLICpix ASICs are presented. In order to improve the detection efficiency close to the physical edge of the sensor, some of the investigated devices are fabricated with an implanted cut edge (active edge). The experimental results for different edge implementations are compared to T-CAD device simulations. Additionally, in view of a monolithic design for the CLIC tracker, first test beam measurements performed on a small analog CMOS demonstrator pixel chip are be presented.

        EMC characterization of Tracker Detectors Bringas

        The control of electromagnetic interference (EMI) phenomena is a very important aspect of any electronic device in order to ensure the correct performance of a whole physics experiment. This aspect is particularly important in the future tracker systems, due to the problems that may appear as a result of the proximity of noise sources to high sensitive modules, fast transients and topology. During the last years and via AIDA2020 EU Project, EMC tests have been performed on several tracker detectors such as CMS at CERN and Belle II at KEK in order to decrease and minimize the electronics integration problems due to electromagnetic noise. EMC tests allow conducting noise studies on physics detectors to improve the noise immunity of the front-end electronics (FEE) in order to assess compatibility with the noise generated by the power supplies, transmitters or any other noise source present in the detector. This design criterion ensures the correct integration of modules, hybrids, FEE and power units, and helps in the design of each of the circuitry to minimize the electromagnetic interference coupled to each of them. This knowledge can be used to set grounding and EMC design rules for future experiments, which allows developing robust FEE designs against electromagnetic interference and sets the preliminary specifications for the power units compatible with any FEE. This contribution shows how to perform an EMC characterization of a tracker detector. Special attention is paid to the type of test that can be performed as well as the main goal of these sets of EMC tests. Also, this work will show how the outcomes from this tests are used by electronics designers to develop robust designs of detector electronics against electromagnetic noise
